Cold emailing can be daunting, but it’s a necessary step in growing and establishing your initiative! This blog post will walk you through 5 crucial tips on writing your best and most effective cold email.

Tip #1 - Keep it short and simple

Paragraphs after paragraphs risk losing the attention of your audience. Time is of the essence! Try to keep your email as short and simple as possible, while including all the necessary information. A good tip for this is splitting up your paragraphs so that it's easier to digest. If you have any doubts ask a friend to read through, and if they’re getting bored halfway, maybe it's a sign to cut down!

Tip #2 - State your mission in a concise manner.

Don’t have your audience searching through the email for what they’re supposed to do, make it clear and obvious. For instance, if you’re emailing for sponsorship for an event, clearly state the details of the event and what their role would entail.

Tip #3 - Do your research!

Make sure you know who it is you are emailing, and showcase your knowledge. This could potentially increase your chances of response! Integrating the reasoning behind why you are emailing this specific person or organization shows that you’ve done your research. If possible, include how you're initiative could help them out in return, for instance by social media exposure.

Tip #4 - Use a compelling subject line & proofread.

The first step to opening your email will be reading the subject line, so it’s important to capture attention at that stage! It can be as simple as including the name of your initiative and its purpose, keeping it short! Before you submit, make sure to proofread. In fact, have your friend proofread it as well! Although this sounds very trivial, the last thing you want in your email is a spelling mistake, or worse, for your reader to not even understand what you’re saying! A tip for keeping it respectful and business-like is using an appropriate email handle. Examples include the name of your initiative or simply your name - ditch sillypuppy@email.com!

Tip #5 - Be respectful and enthusiastic.

Make sure your passion for this project shines through! Introducing your initiative should be the first section of your email. As such, highlighting what your initiative aims to do and how it benefits others in a concise manner is important. But, don't be afraid of showing off your numbers. If your fundraiser has raised an amount, or initiative has reached a certain number of people, make sure to let them know!
